THE CLASH OF THE TITANS !!
In a match that could have gone either way, Italy walks away with crucial points in the most difficult group of this World cup. 2-1.
Italy started with Sirigu, replacing favorite Buffon who got injured. England, playing with a young team, started attacking in the first half with a Sterling shot in the 4th minute. While Italy came down with a proper plan, with experienced Pirlo and De Rossi making moves. Italy, having the huge amount of possession in the first half, continued to pressurise England with their slow, confident penetrating passes. Right wing back Damien, playing his 2nd match, played really well to make series of troubles for the English defenders. England gave full freedom to Sterling, who made some good moves combining with Sturridge. In the 23rd min, Welbeck and Johnson made a combined attack on azzuris, and Welbeck with a good shot, which ended in a corner. On the other hand, Pirlo showed all his class and experience in his passes. The goal came at the end of such a move. His pass to Damien went for a corner. Englad were expecting a long corner, but, short corner was taken to Candreva. Candreva pushed the ball to Pirlo, who brilliantly stepped over to make way for Marchisio. Marchisio had all the time to receive, control and take shot to goal. (1-0, 35').
England gave a quick reply to Italy goal in the 37', when Sterling gave Rooney an excellent through ball to left wing, and Rooney providing a good cross for Sturridge to score. 1-1. Break came after a superb pass, shot and clearance. Pass came from Pirlo, again, to Balotelli. Super Mario charged ahead of Joe Hart, took a turn and curved the ball over Hart in to the post , which was cleared on line by Jagielka.
In the second half, England looked refreshed and more positive with moves. But, Italy scored again from a counter attack. In the 50' Condreva provided a good cross from right wing, which was headed by Mario Balotelli with a header 2-1.
Experienced Rooney was totally off target. He missed real scoring opportunity in the 62'. In the 72', Stuuridge was fowled just outside box by Cheillini. Gerrard took the kicked it over the bar. In the last ten minutes, England continued attacking Italy, but lacked precision to score. First booking came in the 92', when Sterling got yellow. The resulting free was taken by Pirlo, which really went away from Hart, but was denied by the cross bar.
