What a game. . . Action, drama, thriller. The beautiful game at its best. After many turnarounds, another tournament favorites return home from EURO 2020. Star player Mbeppe missing vital penalty kick turned out to be the deciding moment of the game. This was the third match in this round going into extra time, and first one decided by penalties . On Friday, 2 July, Switzerland will meet Spain in quarter final match.
France came to this match without losing a competitive game in 2 years. Swiss were using 3-4-1-2 against France's 3-5-2 formation. Against the predictions, Switzerland took lead in the 15th minute. Zuber gave a juicy cross into the 6 yard box, Seferovic placed it well away from Lloris to get the lead. Zuber has been disturbing France at left flank as Varane received first yellow fouling him. Both teams went for break with that score as France couldnt find target.
In second half, it was Swiss again who came up with a chance to lead. Pavard slides into the feets of Zuber, missing ball inside box, but play continued untill Mbeppe got fouled at the other end. Then referee decided to check VAR and he awarded penalty for Swiss. Rodriguez, who stepped up for the job, was but denied by Lloris diving to his right. Soon after Mbeppe missing target, Benzema levelled the score with a nice touch. Mbeppe pushed ball into the running legs of Benzema, whose touch didnt controlled ball well but he managed to tap it past Sommer with his left. France took lead in 2 minutes time, when Griezman's shot bounced off Sommer's hand came infront of goal at the other side of post, which was a simple tap in for Benzema. Real Madrid man scored his 4th goal of the tournament.
France was slowly taking vontrol of the game. Switzerland started making way for fresh legs as Shaqiri went out for Gavranovic. But again France extended their lead thanks to excellence placing curving shot by Pogba from around 28 yards. Perfectly placed well beyong extending Sommer's hands at the left top corner of the post. Beauty it was. He well deserved the prize as he was having a great match.
It seemed like match is gonna end 3-1 but then more drama was left for the night. It seemed changes worked for Swiss, as Mbabu's cross was headed powerfully into net by Seferovic. Lloris couldn't even move his hands. As the match was going towards final whistle, Gavranovic scored from outside the box, a low flying shot, moving away from Lloris. France were stunned.
Coman, wasn't lucky to be hero for France as he hit post just after Swiss equaliser. As both teams couldn't score in extra time, it was time for first penalty shootout of the tournament.
