Japan, South Korea Asia's representatives to World Stage

In every big tournaments, there are few regular teams like Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, Argentina etc. Brazil being the top contender , Germany most successful in every segment. Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana are African competitors. When we come to asian confederation, out of 47 member nations, only 12 have participated ever in Senior level world cups. Australia and  Saudi Arabia have been part of 5 World cups and reached second round. Iran also have played 5 tournaments, but have never reached second round. North Korea played twice, in 1966 reaching quarter finals and in 2010. Indonesia played in1938. Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, UAE, China are other teams who have played world cup from Asia.

Japan and South Korea have the best competitive record and they are the regular attendees to major tournaments.

Let's see in detail:

KOREA REPUBLIC

Korea Republic/South Korea are the most successful team in Asia. They are participating in World cup regularly since 1986. Also known as Reds, are the first asian team to reach semi final of World cup. Korean association is Korea Football Association. Current coach is Paulo Bento, and captain Heung Min Son, Tottenham star. Cha Bum Kun is the top scorer (58 goals) and most caped player (138). Their current FIFA ranking is 40, 17 being the best ever. Many Korean players are now in Europe, bringing home experience and knowledge of the game.

FIFA World Cup

Korea Republic participated in the tournament for the first time in 1954. They had a big gap after that , until they take part again in 1986. The golden generation,along with one of the finest strickers of Bundesliga that time, Cha Bum Kun, they fought well in the world cup. They lost to eventual champions Argentina 1-0, and Italy 3-2. Their best performance came when they co hosted world cup in 2002 , with Japan.

Famous Dutch coach Guus Hiddink took charge of Korean team in 2001. His first tournament with team was 2001 confederations cup, but he was criticised because of the team's bad performance. Eventually, team gained confidence and strength, by which they achieved their first victory in World Cup defeating Poland . They held US for a 1-1 draw and defeated Portugal 1-0, as they were reduced to 9 men with 2 red cards. In a dramatic second round clash against Italy, Korea came from behind to win 2-1. In quarter final, Spain were their opponents, but match went on to Korea's favor in Penalties.  They lost to mighty Germany 1-0 in semi. They finished fourth after losing to Turkey in loser's final.
2 of the players were elected to the team of the tournament, Hong Myung Bo received third place for Best player of tournament. This increased popularity for the game in Korea. Hiddink became a hero, and Govt gave honorary citizenship and a villa in Korea.

They were able to reach second round only once after that, in 2010. But, in 2018, came their most famous win, 2-0 win against Germany. It's known as Miracle of Kazan. This was one of the most dramatic game of the tournament, with group already deadly, Mexico, Sweden being other teams, all wishing to advance. But, in 80 years, it was first time Germany got eliminated in first round of World cup. Korea couldn't reach to second round, however, decided the fate of the group.

AFC Asian Cup

They were part of 17 Asian cups, and reached final 6 times. They were victorious in 1956 and 1960. Most recent was in 2015.

Asian Games

Till 2002, Korean senior team was participating in Asian games, and now U23 team. Till then, they have reached final 6 times, becoming champions 3 times.
As U23, they became champions in 2014 and 2018.

Olympics

In Olympics, their best result was Bronze in 2012 London. They reached quarter finals of 1948 Olympics.

They also have participated in CONCAF Gold cup in 2000 and 2002, claiming fourth place in 2002. In 2001, they were part of Confederation's cup.

U17

Korea U17 team participates in U17 World cup and AFC Championship.

Korea took part in the U17 world cup 6 times, first being in 1987. Their best result so far is reaching quarter finals, which they have done in 1987,2009 and 2019. In 2015, they beat Brazil , Guinea and draw against England to reach second round, but lost to Belgium.

In U16 AFC tournaments, Korea became Champions in 2002 and 1986. In 2008 and 2014 also they reached final. They were in semi finals of 2018 tournament, which gave them chance to participate in World cup.

U20

Korean U20 team also participates in World cup and AFC Championship.

Their best result in U20 World cup came in 2019, when they reached final in Poland against Ukraine and lost 3-1.
Before that, they were part of the tournament 14 times. In 1983, they were fourth in the tournament. In 1991, 2009 and 2013, they reached quarter finals.

Korean U20 team has been their biggest success. They were Champions of Asia 12 times. 5 times they were Runners up, most recently in 2018. They were able to achive third place 6 times. It really shows why they are the best team of Asia.

U23.

Korean U23 team mainly participates in Olympics, AFC U23 Championship and Asian games since 2002. They qualified for Olympics 8 times, and were bronze medalists in 2012. In Asian games, they have won gold in 2014 and 2018, and bronze in 2002 and 2010. They are the current AFC U23 Champions. In 2016, they lost in final.

Women

Korea Republic women team started with a big loss against Japan in 1999, 13-1. But, they have evolved alot since then. They were able to qualify for 3 world cups - 2003,2015 and 2019. Best result came in 2015, when they reached second round of the tournament. Their current FIFA ranking is 18. 

Since 1991, they appeared in  12 AFC Asian Cup championships. They were never able to become champions , best result being third placed in 2003.

In Asian games, their record is better. They reached third place in last 3 tournaments, fourth before that.

JAPAN

Japan Football team is known as Samurai Blue. Team is under Japan Football Association. Their current FIFA ranking is 28, highest being 9 in 1998, and lowest 62. They started emerging as a prominent team in 1990s. They have competed in 6 FIFA World cups since 1998, 9 times in AFC Asian Cup, 2 time in Copa America, 5 times in Confederations cup. They were Asian Cup champions 4 times, runners up in 2001 confederations cup. Japan co-hosted 2002 FIFA World Cup along with Korea.

Yasuhito Endo has played most for Japan ,152 matches. Kunushige Kamamoto has scored most number of goals (80). Maya Yoshida is the current team captain. Hidetoshi Nakata, Shinji Kagawa, Junichi Inamoto, Keisuke Honda are other prominent players of Japan. Japanese football league J League is considered to be the most successful Football League in Asia.

Hajime Moriyasu is the coach of senior and U23 teams currently. Brazil legend Zico has coached Japan from 2002-2006.

U17

Japan U17 team participated mainly in FIFA U17 tournament and AFC U16 championships. They have qualified for world cup 9 times and were part of AFC championship 15 times.

They participated first time for World cup when they hosted the tournament in 1993 and reached quarter finals. In 2011 also they were able to reach quarter finals, and that's their best result in the tournament.

Japan are the current Asian U16 champions in the segment. They beat Tajikistan in 2018 tournament final 1-0. Previously they were champions in  1994 and 2006, runners up in 2012.

U20

Japan U19 team competes in FIFA U20 World Cup and U19 Asian championships.

They participated in World cup 10 times. Best result was in 1999, when they finished runners up. Before losing to Spain in final 4-0, they beat almost all prominent teams like England, Portugal, Uruguay, Mexico, USA and Cameroon. They were defeated 3 times in Quarter Finals. 2009 to 2015, they were unable to qualify for 4 consecutive World cups.

Japan Participated in AFC U19 championship
40 times since 1959. They were able to become champions only in 2016. They lost in final 6 times 1973,1994,1998,2000,2002,2006.

U23

U23 team mainly prepares for Olympics, Asian games and AFC Cup.

They appeared 7 times in Olympics, came fourth in 2012. They will be hosting next Olympics, which was scheduled for summer 2020, got postponed due to corona pandemic.

Appeared 4 times in AFC U23 championships, and won it in 2016. And 5 times in Asian games and became champions in 2010.

FIFA World Cup

Japan first participated in FIFA World Cup in 1998 France edition. In 1938, they withdrew from tournament due to world war 2. FIFA suspended Japan in 1950. It seems like they never used to play football till 80s. And they came up after that period.

Japan played 6 World cups - 1998,2002,2006,2010,2014,2018, all tournaments from 1998. In 2002,2010,and 2018 they were able to reach round of 16. In 2002 and 2018, they lost to third placed teams of the respective tournaments- Turkey and Belgium.
In 1998, they lost all their group matches. 2002 has been their best , when they hosted the world cup. They reached second round with a 2-2 draw against Belgium, 1-0 win against Russia and 2-0 win against Tunisia. They were 9th in overall position.
In 2006, they were in a tough group, along with Brazil, Australia, and Croatia. They lost to Brazil and Australia and draw with Croatia.
They beat Cameroon and Denmark in 2010, before losing to Paraguay in second round in penalties. In 2014, they lost to Ivory Coast, and Columbia in group stage and draw with Greece. In 2018 World cup, they beat Columbia and became first asian team to beat a Latin American team in World cup. They held Senegal in a 2-2 draw but lost to Poland in group stage. Honda became first Japanese player to score in 3 different world cups.

Confederation's Cup

They took part in tournament 5 times. They were Runners up in 2001. They were hosts along with South Korea. They beat Cameroon, Canada in group stage and held a young  Brazil team 0-0. In Semi final Japan beat Australia 1-0 before losing to France in Final.

AFC Asian Cup

In 1956,60,64,72,80,84 Japan withdrew from tournament. When they started participating, suddenly rose to power by becoming champions in 1992. 1996 they reached quarter finals and again became champions in 2000 and 2004. Again they became champions in 2011. In 2019 , they were Runners up.

Copa America

In 1999 and 2019 , they participated in the Copa America tournaments but couldn't make much impact as they were out in group stages both times. They were also invited for 2011,2015 tournaments too. In 2011, they withdrew due to earthquake and Tsunami.

Club World Cup

Japan hosted FIFA club World cup many times. Sanfrecce Hiroshima reached third in 2015 and in 2016 Kashima Antlers from Japan lost in Final against Real Madrid 4-2 , only because of extra time hattrick by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Women

Japan National Women team are the only asian team to win FIFA World Cup from Asia. They have participated in 9 world cups since 1991, and lifted trophy in 2011 , beating mighty USA  in penalties. They reached final again in 2015 , but lost to USA.

In Olympics also they have good record. They were fourth in 2008 and lost to US in 2012.

In AFC Asian Cup, Japan women team reached final 6 times and were champions 2 times 2014,2018.also, in Asian games , they reached final 6 times and became champions 2 times-2010,2018.

Why England can't win World cups

England has got great football legacy. They have the first association, The FA, one of the most orgnised league, Premier league, clubs with great history, and ofcourse money. Still, they fall miserably in every FIFA tournaments, with big disappointment to fans. They have never won

My thoughts about this article came from my search for best England players in history of game. I was curious and started thinking when I saw the Google search list.

In most of the lists, they have no doubt about Sir Bobby Charlton's greatness. He has won World Cup and Ballon D'or in 1966. Bobby Moore was also there along side in the historic world Cup win. He was the captain of England team when they won 1966 World Cup. He is considered to be one of the greatest defenders of all time.

We have no doubt about the talents of Rooney, Beckham, Lampard and Gerard too.

Now let's look a bit deeper into each one's career.

As you can see, most of them spent career in England other than David Beckham and Gary Linekar. Owen couldn't play much in Real due to injuries. I have always felt, Beckham has got more love and fans around the world than any other player, due to his success in and outside England. Do you feel that was a reason?

Then, I started thinking more about it.

7 among the above list played together in 2006 World Cup, let's check the team list:

Only David Beckham and Owen Hargreaves were playing outside England. This Sven Goran Ericcson managed team was great who could have won it for England. But lost to Portugal in the Quarter Finals.

Then I thought about checking latest squad , who participated in 2018 Russia edition of World Cup.

France

Croatia

None were there. I was praying to see Sancho name in list, who was playing for Borussia Dortmund, but he wasn't there. Harry Cane became top scorer and team reached fourth. This was their best result in decades, after 1990 fourth place finish. 

Meanwhile, as you can see, Finalists France and Croatia had a good mix of players from different leading clubs. Experience of Luca Modric and Rakitic were key in their success, even though they were not in same club or same style of play. France had best players in most of the positions, Lloris, Mbeppe, Pogba, Pavard, Griezman , all from different clubs in different situations. Does this make sense?

In 2002, 2010, 2014 were also it was similar.

In 2002 , they reached quarter and lost to Brazil. 2010, Germany thrashed them in second round 4-1. They couldn't reach second round of 2014 tournament. Ukraine 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup Champions

UKRAINE

Ukraine was part of Russia till 1991. It is the second largest country in Europe. Their capital is Kiev. In popular culture, people are orthodox Christians. It's positioned near Black sea, with countries like Poland, Belarus, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Russia share borders to it. Famous Carpathian mountains and Danube are borders of Ukraine. All other part of Ukraine are plateaus, plain land.

FOOTBALL IN UKRAINE

Football is the most popular game in the country. Football is managed by Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF). With soviet influence, Ukraine had a long sporting and physical education. By the time it got seperate d from Russia, they had already built hundreds of gyms, stadiums, and swimming pools.

After its separation from Russia, Andrey Shevchenko has been the most famous player who got Ballon D'or. He has been captain of the team for most number of matches 58, from 1995-2012 period. Also, he is the top scorer for the country with 48 goals. He is the current head coach of National team. Senior team got chance to play FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2006, when they reached quarter finals and lost to eventual champions Italy.

Currently Ukraine is 24th ranked in FIFA, and women are 26th ranked. A project is going on for the development of football in the country called "Around Football" , which acts as a social responsibility activity through football. Girls and boys use the good sides of the plan, which helps them in getting match/Tournaments experiences, to visit and watch big clubs, meet big players , helping struggling kids including war effected and refugee kids.
2006 has been their best year, reaching quarter final of World Cup, runners up in U21 European championship and 13th rank in FIFA.

Association along with its collective members regulate and organise all kind of football activities in Ukraine. Collective members include Premier League of Ukraine, Professional Football League of Ukraine, amateur Football League of Ukraine, 27 Regional football federations, women football, association of referees, veterans, students etc.

Ukraine Premier League is the top division league with 12 teams participating. Dynamo Kyiv has been most successful with 12 successfull seasons. Current champions are Shaktar Donetsk. Both these teams has been successful in achieving some success in European level too. In 2015,  club Dnipto reached UEFA Europa league final, lost to Sevilla 3-2. Professional Football League is the second and third division professional leagues in Ukraine.

TEAMS

Ukraine have U16,U17,U18,U19,U21,Senior Men and women teams. U19 team plays in European championships to get qualification to U20 World Cup and form a special U20 team for the tournament. U18 players are immediate reserves to U19 team.

U17 team have never qualified for FIFA U17 World Cup. Their best performance in European championships came in 1994, when they acquired 3rd position.

U19 team were European champions in 2009. In 2004 and 2018 they were able to reach semi final. They qualified for the U20 FIFA World Cup 4 times - 2001,2005,2015, and 2019. They were able to reach round of 16 every time. Ukraine's Oleksandr Aliev has won FIFA bronze boot in 2005. Kyrylo Petrov won UEFA Golden player award in 2009. Viktor Kovalenko was top scorer of 2015 U20 World Cup. Also won fair play award from FIFA in 2015.

U21 team mainly plays to qualify for Olympics. They were able to become runner up in 2006 European championships. But never were able to qualify for Olympics.

Senior team have qualified for FIFA World Cup only once, 2006. They were defeated by eventual champions Italy in Quarter Finals. They participated in Euro 3 times with group stage playing as best results.

THE COACH

Oleksandr Petrakov

62 year old Oleksandr Petrakov was a defender during his time. Most of his playing experience was  in Ukraine. Ukraine had plan of World cup and appointed Petrakov in 2011 as U16 coach, then continued with same team till 2015 world cup as U17, U18,U19 and eventually U20 coach. In New Zealand, they reached second round and lost to Senegal in penalties.

In 2015, he was again appointed as U16 coach started making this team. As his experience goes, his team was based on defensive strengths, defensive midfielders were used to plan attack, sending long balls deep into opposite team half, and attack from wings.

Ukraine gave second chance for Petrakov believing him that he would give them the desired result. In the U19 European Championships, they were looking strong, before they were thrashed badly by Portugal 5-0. But, then defense became stronger. They had never conceded more than one goal in matches after that.

Now , he has been appointed again as U16 team coach. They are again eyeing the top result in 2013 for sure.

Serhiy Nahornyak

Serhiy was U19 coach who was with Petrakov in World cup time. He was more of attacking mentality person, who has got a vast playing experience in Ukraine Premier league before becoming coach. He was an attacking midfielder or Stricker in his team's.

FIFA U20 WORLD CUP 2019 Poland

Since 2007, 7 tournaments were held. Everytime, a new team won it.

Only 2 countries submitted bid to host the tournament, India and Poland. Poland previously have hosted Euro 2012, and U21 European championships in 2017.

Again, for the 6th consecutive time, champion team couldn't qualify, this time it was England. Other missing big names were Brazil, Spain and Germany. Mali again qualified but Ghana couldn't reach Poland, from Africa.

Ukraine were in Group D along with USA, Nigeria and Qatar.

Match 1

Ukraine started the campaign against USA. They scored first goal in 26 min, by Buletsa.
USA replied with a well constructed goal in the 33rd minute. Serbania tapped in from close range after quick passes. But, Ukraine scored again in the 48th minute from a corner. Popov connected well to send ball to the net.

Match 2

Qatar vs Ukraine

0-1

Qatar fought really well. Ukraine came close to scoring couple of times in the first half. They broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, Popov scored his second goal from header in the second match. Qatari captain got red card for a ruthless tackle in the 84th minute.

Match 3

Nigeria vs Ukraine

1-1

Ukraine took lead after half an hour play, Sikan scored from a cross with his head. Nigeria got a penalty just before half time, but Lunin , goal keeper of Ukraine, saved it. But in the opening minutes of the second half, Ukraine conceded one more penalty , this time for a handball. Tijani converted this one to level the score.

Ukraine became group leaders , USA and Nigeria also reached second round from the group.

In the history of the game, it was first time a top scorer scored all goals from a single match. Norway were out of the tournament in the first round , winning only 1 match against Honduras, when they scored 13 goals, and 9 of them by Erling Haaland.

European champions Portugal and Mexico couldn't make it to the second round.

Ukraine Vs Panama

Ukraine were too good for Panama. Sikan scored in the 21, 45+1 minutes. Both goal were scored with excellent simple finishing touches. Popov scored his third goal of the tournament in the 41st minute. Agian a header, this time a gift from Panama keeper. Buletsa completed the score in the 83rd minute. Walker scored Panama's consolation goal.

Argentina, Uruguay, Nigeria, France, and Japan were eliminated in the second round.

Quarter Finals

Ukraine Vs Columbia

1-0

Columbia were in Group A, with Senegal , Tahiti and hosts Poland. They defeated Tahiti and Poland, but lost to Senegal. New Zealand were their second round opponents. Spirited New Zealand held them 1-1 till extra time, and lost in a thrilling penalty 5-4.

Ukraine played without their favorites Keeper Lunin, who had to go for senior teams's Euro 2020 qualifier match. 

The decisive goal of the match came in the 11 the minute. Columbia n keeper came too much to the field with ball reachable for Sikan. With ball and Sikan went past beyond Columbian defense, Sikan just had to tap ball into the net. Tsitaishvili got an open chance in the second half, but his shot bounced over the bar.

Mali, USA, Senegal were other teams to return home after quarter finals.

Semi Final

Italy vs Ukraine

0-1

Italy were in Group B alongside Japan, Ecuador, Mexico. They reached second round defeating Mexico, Ecuador and a goal less draw against Japan.

Poland were their second round opponents, Mali in the quarter finals. They were looking very confident and fierce in attack.

Ukraine defense was strong. Especially goal keeper Lunin, who was Real Madrid player, was very confident and strong. He has been phenomenal in Ukraine reaching Semi final.

After a goal less first half, Buletsa scored in the 65th minute, from a right wing ground cross. Sikan got a superb chance in the 75th min, but his shot went just past far post. Popov got red card in the 79th minute and he would miss final match. But, Italy couldn't use the advantage. Meanwhile, Ukraine hit cross bar when Italy keeper was beaten. Capone got best chance of Italy, but his close range left foot shot went above cross bar. Soon, Italy thought they scored but there was a foul just before taking shot.

FINAL

Ukraine Vs Korea Republic

3-1

Korea were in Group F, along with Argentina, Portugal and South Africa. They started with a 1-0 loss to Portugal. But, bounced back defeating South Africa and Argentina. Japan were their opponents in the second round, Korea defeated them 1-0. In a thrilling quarter final match against Senegal, Korea came from behind fighting back , which went into penalties. In semi final, Korea defeated Ecuador challenge.

South Korea were the first to take lead from a penalty in the 5th min. Korean captain Hwang Taehyeon was tackled down in the box, Lee Kangin defeated Lunin without making mistake. Ukraine were determined to make an impact, they kept pressing for the equaliser , which came from a free kick in the 34th min. Bulesta's free kick inside box wasn't cleared properly and Supriaha kicked it from 8 yard into the net.

Supriaha was again fortunate to change score into Ukraine's favour, as he got a deflected through ball in the 53rd min. He took a low right foot shot to send the ball past keeper.

In the 70th minute, Korea turned ball to the goal from a corner, but couldn't beat Lunin , who tipped away the ball to deny an equaliser.

In the 89th minute, while Korea trying to build an attack, Tsitaishvili intercepted a pass from just outside Ukraine box, then ran all the way across the field, deceiving Korean defenders, and sent the ball past the keeper to seal the match.

THIRD PLACE

Ecuador played against Italy and defeated in the extra time to bag third place in the tournament.

When coach got time with  his team, they built strong relation in and off the field. Coach never praised individual talents , but he always emphasised on giving credit to total team. മുനിസിപ്പൽ ലീഗ് മുതൽ സൂപ്പർലിഗ വരെ 2770 ക്ലബ്ബുകൾ രാജ്യത്തുണ്ട്. താഴെത്തട്ടിലുള്ളവർ മുതൽ മുതിർന്നവർ വരെ വർഷം മുഴുവൻ ലീഗ് മത്സരങ്ങൾ നടക്കുന്നു. കുട്ടികൾക്ക് പ്രത്യേക ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ അവർ യുവേഫ മാർഗ്ഗനിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾ അനുസരിച്ച് പരിശീലനവും മത്സരങ്ങളും നടത്തുന്നു. അവർക്ക് പ്രധാനമായും ലീഗിൽ 8 സ്റ്റേജുകളുണ്ട്. മൂന്നാം ഘട്ട ലീഗിനെ ബെൽഗ്രേഡ്, വോജ്‌വോഡിന, കിഴക്ക്, പടിഞ്ഞാറ് എന്നിങ്ങനെ നാല് സോണുകളായി തിരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. നാലാം ഘട്ടം 10 ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളായി. അഞ്ചാം ഘട്ടത്തിൽ 31 ലീഗുകളുണ്ട്. ആറാമത്തേതിൽ 52 ലീഗുകളും ഏഴാമത്തേതിൽ 57 ഉം എട്ടാമത് 7 ലീഗുകളുമുണ്ട്. അതിനാൽ അവരുടെ കളിക്കാർക്ക് അടിസ്ഥാന തലത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വളരെയധികം മാച്ച് അനുഭവം ലഭിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാണ്.

2. U17 ടീം

സെർബിയൻ യു 17 ടീം ഒരിക്കലും ഫിഫ ലോകകപ്പിന് യോഗ്യത നേടിയിട്ടില്ല. യുവേഫ ടൂർണമെന്റുകളിൽ അവർ കൂടുതൽ വിജയിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. അടുത്തിടെ നടന്ന യുവേഫ U16 / 17 മത്സരങ്ങളുടെ ഗ്രൂപ്പ് ഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ അവർ പുറത്തായി.

3. യു 20 ടീം

സെർബിയൻ യു 20 ടീമിനെ ഒർലിസി എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്, അതായത് യംഗ് ഈഗിൾസ്. 2013 ൽ യൂറോ U19 ചാമ്പ്യന്മാരായപ്പോൾ അവർ ആദ്യം തങ്ങളുടെ പറക്കൽ ശക്തി കാണിച്ചു. 2014 ൽ യുവേഫ U19 ചാമ്പ്യൻഷിപ്പ് സെമി ഫൈനലിലെത്തിയ അവർ 2015 ഫിഫ ലോകകപ്പിന് യോഗ്യത നേടി. 2005, 2009,2011,2013,2014 എന്നീ വർഷങ്ങളിൽ അവർ നേരത്തെ യുവേഫ സെമിയിൽ എത്തിയിരുന്നു.

2013 ൽ ഒരു മത്സരത്തിലും പരാജയപ്പെടാതെ അവർ യുവേഫ U19 ചാമ്പ്യന്മാരായി. എന്നാൽ 2014 ൽ അവർ ഒരു മത്സരത്തിൽ മാത്രമാണ് വിജയിച്ചത്, 3 സമനില.

ഹെഡ് കോച്ച്

വെൽജ്കോ പൗണോവിച്ച്

ടീമിന്റെ നട്ടെല്ലും തലച്ചോറുമാണ് കോച്ച്. ഒരു ടീമിന് ഒരു ടീമിൽ മാജിക് ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയും. അതാണ് വെൽജോ പൗണോവിച്ച് ഈ ടീമിനോട് ചെയ്തത്. സെർബിയ ഇത് നന്നായി ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്തു. അവർ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ 2012 മുതൽ പരിശീലകനായി നിയമിച്ചു, U18 ടീമിന്റെ, പിന്നീട് അവനെ U19 ടീമാക്കി, തുടർന്ന് U20 ടീമാക്കി. അതിനാൽ ആ ടീം അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം വളരെക്കാലം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, അത് മികച്ച ധാരണ സൃഷ്ടിക്കാൻ അവരെ സഹായിച്ചു.

How Serbia became U20 Champions in 2015.

FIFA conducts World Cup tournaments in four categories - U17,U20,U23[Olympics]. U20 world Cup is considered to be the competition of future super stars in Football. List goes from Diego Maradona , Lionel Messi to latest sensation Earling Haaland. Started in 1977,  22 tournaments were held so far with 11 countries achieving the trophy - Argentina 6 times and Brazil 5 times. It's surprising that Nigeria have never won it with their super success in U17 category. Also, with so much football in England,  they have won it only once. (It's a shame that they have won every FIFA World Cup only once with their great legacy in the game) . To qualify for the tournament, each team compete in their respective confederation's U20/U19 matches.

Serbia have participated in the tournament 3 times , twice as Yugoslavia (1979,1987) and as Serbia in 2015. They were champions in 1987 but their name wasn't heard much after becoming Serbia. As Yugoslavia, they created a scoring record of 3.66, which stands unbroken even now. After country's dissolution, Serbia team was made. Some other famous teams came by this way are Croatia, Slovenia etc. Europe is the playground of the world, as we all know. Serbia is surrounded by so much football, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia. So this country already have a great football history , like many other European countries.

With some tension in and around the country, Serbia have a great sporting culture. They participate in Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Water polo to the highest level. All know Novak Djokovic for sure. They have won Olympic golds in Water polo and Volleyball too. Many of their athletes are successful in achieving medals including Olympic golds.

Football is the main sport of the country. Belgrade Red Star being the most famous club and players like Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd), Ivanovic (Che), Matic (Che). They have also qualified for the last four World cups too. The Football Association of Serbia organises tournaments and leagues. Serbian superliga is the top league. There are men, women and youth leagues in the country.

It was very odd for Serbia to become champions because they have never ever after 2015 played or qualified into U20 World Cup or UEFA U19 championships. If Leicester winning Premier League was a miracle, Serbia winning U20 World Cup was miracle of miracles. They got one chance to participate in 28 years and they used it very well to glory.

ORGANISATION

1.LEAGUES

There are 2770 clubs in the country starting from Municipal league to Superliga. From grassroots to senior have league competitions throughout the year. They conduct coaching and competitions under UEFA guidelines, with special care to children.  They have mainly 8stages in league.  Third stage league is divided into Four zones - Belgrade, Vojvodina , east and west. Fourth stage into 10 groups. 5th stage have 31 leagues. 6th have 52 leagues, 7th have 57 and 8th 7 leagues. So it's clearly evident that their players get so much match experience from base level.


2. U17 TEAM

With the given organisation and history, Serbian U17 team have never qualified for FIFA World Cup. They have been not much successful in UEFA Qualifications too. They were knocked out in group stages of recent UEFA U16/17 competitions.

3. U20 TEAM

The Serbian U20 team is known as Orlici which means Young Eagles. They showed their flying powers first when they became EURO U19 champions in 2013. They reached UEFA U19 championship Semi-final in 2014 by which got qualified for the 2015 FIFA World Cup. They had earlier reached UEFA semis in 2005, 2009,2011,2013,2014.

In 2013, they became UEFA U19 champions without losing any match. But in 2014, they have won only 1 match and 3 were draws.


THE HEAD COACH

Veljko Paunovic

Coach is the backbone and brain of team , working out and over them. A team can do magic in a team. That's what really Veljko Paunovic did to this team. Serbia planned for this very well. They appointed him as coach from 2012, of U18 team, later made him U19 team, and then U20 team. So that team stayed with him for a long time, and that helped them to create great understanding.

He had a long 11 season club playing career as Forward or attacking midfielder in Spain, Germany, Russia and US. Usually with Athletico Madrid and some time with Mallorca nd Getafe. That's experience was clearly visible in the team's swift attacks. He gained his coaching pro license also from Spain. Paunovic was one reason for the team's success. He was then just 37 years old and young players merged very well with him. Paunovic was able to make them very confident, put the dream of lifting trophies in their hearts and minds and passion.

Milan Kosanovic

It will be rude to not mention him. As assistant coach, he was with the team from 2013. You can't see his name anywhere. But, he had a good experience with young boys, and that was crucial for the tournament. He was very good in identifying and using talents.



THE TEAM

One team with one motto. It was their  slogan. The team and coach reached for the tournament as a family. Goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic was their captain. Savic brothers were also part of the team, younger one Vanja GK and Sergej MF. Stefan Ilic was the forward and he was supported by Ivan Saponjic, Mandic. Along with attacking midfielders Jankvoic and Savic. Maksimovic, Zivkovic, Gacinovic where other MFs. Defense was formed by Antonov, Gajic, Zdjelar, Velkovic. By the time they reached New Zealand, all were good friends, with close coordination and very good understanding. They were strong physically and mentally.

THE PLAYING STYLE

Serbia played with real venom in the tournament. They were not much interested in keeping ball possession but wanted to attack fast. It was very clear in the match against Mali, they had only 33% ball possession but 20 shots.


2015 FIFA WORLD CUP

2015 New Zealand edition of FIFA World Cup was 20th. It was third time New Zealand hosting a FIFA tournament, 1999 U17 World Cup, 2008 Women's world cup were previous. For the fourth consecutive time, previous champions couldnt qualify for the tournament, this time being France, who were 2013 champions. As usual, Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Nigeria were tournament favorites. Unusually, Hungary, Ukraine, Serbia, Austria were representing Europe, along with Germany and Portugal. Usual names like Spain, France, Italy couldn't make it. Also, some other new faces were there to compete like Fiji, Myanmar, Mali, Qatar and Uzbekistan.  Total 24 teams reached New Zealand.



FIRST ROUND

For the league cum knockout tournament, Serbia were in Group D , along with Uruguay, Mali, Mexico. It was a dramatic group. Mexico were considered to be the strongest team but they were eliminated in the group stage. It was dramatic because Mali surprised others by beating Mexico and held Uruguay in a 1-1 draw. But, Mexico beat Uruguay. And Serbia started with a loss 0-1 to Uruguay. But, Uruguay managed to reach second round with third place. Adama Traore's brilliance and scoring against Uruguay and Mexico helped them.

Another big name who returned home after group stage was Argentina, who have won the cup most number of times.


Match 1.

Uruguay vs Serbia

1-0

Rajkovic made save of the tournament , with reflex to keep the first half clean. Serbia also couldn't break the deadlock as they missed some chances. In the 56th min, Periera decievd Rajkovic, who was waitg for the bounce but Uruguay Stricker cunningly tapped over bounce and rolled past him. Serbia kept on pressing for the goal but couldn't score as Uruguay defense and keeper did their best. Saponjic got a 1v1 chance with goal keeper but shot directly to his hand.


Match 2

Mali vs Serbia

2-0

On June 3,2015, by the time they meet, so much drama already had happened in the group. Mali beat a strong Mexican side 2-0 , and Mexico beat Uruguay 2-1, so Serbia had fancy chances. To give an advantage, Savic scored in the 27 min, from a superb low placed free kick. Match saw the advantages of coached by a coach who had an attacking background. They kept on trying to score more and more. They found the target again in the 74th min by Mandic and Mali couldn't beat Rajkovic.


Match 3

Serbia Vs Mexico

2-0

It was the group decider game. Winner becomes group leaders. They got early advantage, in the second min from goal by Maksimovic. Savic created the chance , from a long throw deep into Mexican box. He used his height well, to connect ball across goal, which Maksimovic headed into net. Mexico kept trying hard with long shots. They had a total of 21 shots ,9 of them on target. Rajkovic was strong and Efficient to clear the danger. They took lead just before half time (43') when Zivcovic's left footed 35 yard free kick curled into the top right corner of the goal. Mexico fought back but eventual fate was to go back home.


Round of 16

Serbia Vs Hungary

2-1

Hungary were in Group E, along with N. Korea, Brazil, and Nigeria. They lost their matches against Nigeria and Brazil, but scored 5 goals against N. Korea, which gave them advantage. Again in Round of third placed teams, they finished fourth to gain a ticket to round of 16 in goal advantage.

But, they were not ready to give their hard earned chance without a fight.
Their goal keeper made 2 brilliant saves in the first half. Half time ended 0-0, but Hungary scored in the 57' and gained lead. Later in the second half, again Hungary goal keeper did well to keep away a shot from Maksimovic. But they leveled the score in the 91st min from a corner. Saponjic ran in and connected with head to send ball into the net. But again Serbia came under pressure when Gajic got second yellow and red card. They were playing with 10 men, but their determination got paid off just 2 min before end of extra time.  Saponjic was trying to cross and it got deflected from the foot of Hungarian defender Talaber, which flew well over Goalkeeper into the net.

Serbia show real strength to their European counter parts with 8 corners to 2, 6 on target shots to 3.

Quarter Finals

Serbia vs USA

0-0(6-5)

USA came from Group A, where they defeated asian team Myanmar, hosts New Zealand but losing to Ukrain. In round of 16, they managed to defeat Columbia 1-0.

Both goalkeepers did well to manage not concede goals. Zivkovic's second half free kick was superb but US goalkeeper got a hand to it to deny goal. Saponjic got a chance but ball went past his sliding extended foot in despair. Match went into penalties after 0-0 in extra time too.

Rajkovic couldn't score but later saved kicks to take Serbia to Semi finals.


Semi Final

Serbia vs Mali

2-1

After becoming third in the group, Mali went on to play Round of third placed teams and finished second there with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss. Also, they scored and conceded 3 goals. But in round of 16, they beat their African counter parts Ghana convincingly 3-0.  In quarter finals, Germany was their opponents , which went into penalties after 1-1 till extra time. They had grown in confidence by reaching semi final.

Serbia took lead in the 4the minute , thanks to the goal by Zivkovic from a brilliant defense splitting through ball from Savic. After few min, Savic was denied by a goal line clearance. Mali equalised in the 39'. Kone surprised Rajkovic with a low flying long range effort which bounced at his left. But, Rajkovic saved a shot from Diara in the first half confidently. In the second half, Gajic's shot hit crossbar. Match went into extra time.
Saponjic , who came in as substitute in second half, scored from a close range header of a corner in 101 min to seal the match. Kone got a second yellow and was sent off. Zivkovic couldn't score a 1v1 chance with goal keeper but it was enough to make them jubilant.

They partied. Players started to think they have already achieved. Playing mighty Brazil in a World cup final, was more than a dream for them coming alive.

FINAL

" If I can nutmeg a Brazilian, You can also do that, past or present. So go out and enjoy with your talent"

Young coach showed them his success over Brazilian players and said this to motivate his boys. Well , the rest is history.

Serbia came to final with 3 consecutive extra time meetings , while Brazil were like already champions to the world, after beating a mighty Senegal 5-0 , who defeated Germany in the quarter final. On the other hand, Mali had grown in strength and confidence from their group stages, and were reluctant to accept defeat in Semi final clash. Serbian determination cut short their dream run.

Brazil have always been favorites. They do that kind of fantasy and magic in the field. The yellow jersey even make admiration for the opposition. They had not conceded any goal since second match of group stage against Hungary till final.
"Don't feel second to none one. Legacy and talent don't match everytime. You have the talent to win it" Paunovic said and Serbian young boys started aiming and dreaming for the trophy.

Beating Brazil Plan

"Every Brazilian wants to score. They attack with numbers. A swift counter attack would do the job. "

That what they did. They defended well in their half and waited for their chance.

After a goal less first half, shocking everyone, Serbia took lead in the 70th min with a well orchestrated attack move. Mandic just had to tap in for the cross. In 73rd min ,Andres Pereira, a born in Belgium, playing in Man Utd, came in as substitute and scored a magical fantasy goal, which was one of the goals of the tournament. Rajkovic stood tall between goal and Brazil whenever needed. That took the match to extra time, where Serbia won the battle of mental and physical strength. That also gave them a psychological advantage. In the 118th min, they nutmegged Brazilians , and created a chance with quick counter by moving behind Brazilian defenders, exactly as they had planned. Maksimovic run through the defenders and checked how far they are , before rolling ball past goal keeper into the net.


Rajkovic was selected as the best goalkeeper of the tournament and recieved Golden glove.
Bence mervo of Hungary and Viktor Kovalenko of Ukraine shared golden Boot with 5 goals. Adama Traore's brilliance gained him player of the tournament Golden ball award.

For Serbia, 4 players scored 2 goals each becoming top scorers - Mandic, Zivkovic, Maksimovic, and Saponjic. It clearly says how they played as a united team to achieve the feat. They scored 10 goals in total. Players like Savic are now grown into big players with huge price tags. Coach Paunovic now is head coach for MSL club. They all are reliving the memory of their epic achievement. Annual get togethers and WhatsApp group connections are still going.
