First Round - Euro 2020 - Leaving 8 teams from Tournament

 As the Euro moves to second round, giving us some good high quality matches, here is a review on 8 teams bowed out of tournament after first round. 

1. HUNGARY

They have won hearts. First thing comes to mind when I think about Hungary matches are the supporters. . . Omg, that was huge and overwhelming. They look like celebrating and backing their team to bring back the glory of 1950s. It was unfortunate that they were in Death group ,but still they were alive till 84th min of very last game of Round.

In the first match itself, they have shown their defensive capabilities. Portugal were denied goal till 84th min , and broke deadlock in a lucky deflection. But, Portugal scored 2 more. 

When you are in a group with all giants alongside, you wont get a breathing space. After Portugal, it was France, but in that Hungary took lead in 45th min, in a beautiful counter attack. France were dominating, but couldn't score, thanks to the defensive works, and finally found equaliser in 66th min by Griezman. And in the third match, Germany were on the brink of getting eliminated, after Hungary took lead twice, with excellent goals, but Germany's perseverance paid off in the 84th min strike from Goretzka. 

Hoping to see Hungary playimg world cup, with better luck, as they are currently second in Qualifying group behind England with 2 wins from 3 matches, where Poland is 4th. 

2. TURKEY 

In my predictions before tournament, i had put Turkey as group toppers. You can imagine how disappointed I would be when they go back with 0 points. I was hoping to see some good performance from them, as they defeated Holland on March 24 in a World Cup qualifier 4-2 score.

In my opinion, Turkey had only 2 succes in the tournament, stopped Italy from scoring in first half, scored goal against Switzerland. I hoped much better with AC Milan player Calhanoglu playing in the side.

Russia 1-4 Denmark

Russia started with a loss to World number one team Belgium, but gave hope with win over Finland. But, Denmark, who found their fire demolished Russia in the final group game. Russian supporters expected much more from their side as the team had reached quarter finals of World cup and there losing to finalists Croatia in penalties.

Poland had scored 4 goals in the tournament and 3 among them by star stricker Robert Lewandowski. Poland had a good tournament, they fought well in all their matches. They held spain for 1-1 draw. But lost to Slovakia after being reduced to 10 men with a red card. In the vital 3rd match, They were level with Sweden with 2 brilliant goals from Lewandowski, but Swedes got away with 94th min goal by Claesson. 

This could be last time we see Lewandowski in Euro , bow to him. 

5. SLOVAKIA

Till their goal keeper Dubravka's howler to concede first goal against Spain, they had chances to progress to the second round. The New Castle keeper was standing in a heroic posture after initial Penalty save to deny Morata, but then team got ripped away by Spain. Before that, Slovakia had conceded just 2, one in the winning match and then collapsed totally.

Mctominay, Billy Gilmour, Adams, McGinn, Robertson, Armstrong, Tierney - you might have heard these names if you follow football,. Yes, they are big players from English Premier league clubs with experience. But Scotland disappointed in the tournament, by not scoring when they needed. Their success remains holding England for a 0-0 draw, thanks to brilliant play by Chelsea midfielder Gilmour. Scotland scored only 1 goal , that came as equaliser to Croatia in the first half, by Croatia took away the game by goals from Magician Modric, and Perisic. What a goal that was from Modric, we cant see him score everyday, but when he does, that will be beauty, like the one he scored in World cup against Argentina. They missed Gilmour in the final match as he tested Covid +ve . 

Scotland had got eliminated in all of their 11 appearances in major tournaments like World cup and Euro.

7. FINLAND

Finland must be going back happily as they scored and won in their very first Euro campaign ever in team history. Even though we saw Eriksen's collapse and hard hearted Denmark continuing match, they were able to mark their name in it. Eventually, they lost to Russia after a good fight and a hoped loss to Belgium. I doubt Pukki would get another chance in Euro. 

8. North Macedonia

Even though N Macedonia were freshers in Euro, never seemed like it. Pandev and Leeds United star Alioski lead team well. Their best match was against Ukraine, with 47% ball possession, 400-450 passes, 86-84 pass accuracy, 17-13 shots , 8-5 on target, 5-5 corners. They deserved a point. 

Tournament also saw their best player ever Pandev retiring from international colors, in a very emotional moment. Thumps up for N Macedonia.

England Edge past Croatia with a narrow win

Eventhough Southgate has got plenty of talent in his bag, this England team need much more coordination especially in the midfield. Team had a sweet revenge moment against Croatia for their loss in World cup semi final against same opposition, but needed more convincing result. 

The result deciding moment came in the 57th minute when Leeds player Kevin Phillips found space just outside box of Croatia and pushed ball through for Sterling, who tapped it past Keeper after a moment of hesitation. Earlier, a brilliant left foot shoot from Foden hit the upright of Croatian goal in the first half, which he deserved to get the eventual prize. Later, Harry Kane and Sterling got good chances inside the box, they couldn't hit the target. 

England played a 4-2-3-1 against the World cup runners , Pickford at goal and Mings, Stones at Centre back positions. Philips and Declan Rice were positioned as CDMs after his experiments in friendly matches. Mount as CAM and Sterling, Foden as wingers along with lone forward captain Kane as expected. 

Team uses more wing attacks even with a good strong midfield line up and formation good for attack through centre. Defense looked really good. Kyle walker, Stones and Mings used their strength and experience to defend well. Southgate started using 4-2-3-1 formation just ahead of EURO campaign, in the friendly matches, in which team won for the same score. While defending, team is coming to shape, but during attacks, looks like team is yet to remember their change from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1. Also, I personally felt Sancho, Grealish should have given chance and Kalvert Lewin should have got atleast 20 min to play. 

Load of talent might be the main worry for England manager. This was the first time these midfielders playing together in this formation. They failed to create more chances even with possession and more passing. Transition to attack failed to form a counter due to lack of coordination. 

But, I dont think Southgate is going to keep the same team for the next match with So many good players are waiting on bench to show their things. Also, he can try 3-5-2 with this many players waiting on the bench, Kalvert Lewin and Kane as Forwards, with same Midfielders.

Germany Becomes U21 Euro Champions for the Third time

Little History about U21 Euro cup

Euro U21 came to existence as we see it since 1978. Also, since 1992, it is the qualification tournament for summer Olympics. Italy and Spain are most successful with 5 tittles each. Germany got their thrid tittle now. Tournament happens every 2 year. Tournament is considered to be the stepping stone to the national team. Players like Buffon, Casillas, Ozil , Huntelaar, Figo, Cech, Pirlo started their international careers in the youth teams. 

Germany won the cup in 2009, 2017 prior to this. 

Next edition will be organised by Romani and Georgia in 2023.

At the start of the match, Portugal attacked Germany continuously but they couldnt hit target. First half ended with 0-0 score when Germany regained their dominance and started threatening Portuguese. Wirtz shot hit on cross bar in the 15th min and keeper saved Nmecha's shot at 20th min . Maier's shot was  saved by Portugal keeper Costa excellently. 

The Germans took lead in the starting minutes of the first half. . Nmecha came ahead to snatch a loose german shot before it reaching to keeper and tapped past keeper. It was his first goal in the tournament though. Portuguese could hit target only once in the entire game , of their 10 shots and Germans were determined to win this one.

Even though, it looked simple prediction to go for Germany and Netherlands, Romania surprised all by holding Germany and Netherlands. Also, Netherlands held Germany on draw making 3 teams with 2 draws and 1 win against Hungary. Eventually, Germany and Netherlands moved through to second round. 

Group B

Spain were dominant in the group with 2 win and draw against Italy, and Italy with 1 win and 2 draws. Both teams advanced to the second round. 

Group C

Denmark beat all the teams in the group, without conceding a single goal and finished 6. France, losing their first match against Russia and Iceland and reached second round along with Denmark. Russia got a consolation win against Iceland. 

Group D

England reached for the Euro U21 with an experienced , star studded squad from Premier league clubs - Nketiah, Smith Rowe, from Arsenal, Hudson Odoi from Chelsea,  Ramsdale from Sheffield United, Cantwell from Norwich city, Jones from Liverpool, Eze from crystal palace etc. . . But they could win only against Croatia in their final match, losing against Portugal and Switzerland. Scored 2 goals only that too in the last match. On the other hand, Portugal show real strength winning 3 of their 3 matches and didnt concede a single goal.

Spain vs Croatia

Spain played a 4-3-3 and Croatia used 4-1-4-1.  Both team looked strong and disciplined, but spain were more keen for attacking. Croatian defense did well to keep them away from goal. Sevilla player who is currently with Eiber in loan has been real threat in the left flank for Croatia. From his assist, Spain took lead in the 66th min. Puado scored by turning the cross into the net. They missed an open net in 83rd min. But, from a foul in the penalty box by Guillamon in the injury time, Captain Ivanusec scored the equaliser for Croatia. Spain took 18 shots but score stood 1-1 until 116 min of extra time, again Puado scored with an excellent calm finish.

Netherlands vs France

Both future giants in European football clashed for their spot in Semi final at Bozsic Arena, Budapest Hungary. France started without former Arsenal man  , now Hertha Berlin midfielder Matteo Guendouzi ,both team playimg 4-4-2  but france looked more focused and sharp at attack. They shook the net In the 23 rd min from a corner. Centre back Upamecano turned a free header past Holland Keeper Bijlow. Justin Kluivert was the main attacking target of Holland. Former legend, Patrick Kluiverts son kept on disturbing French defense.  Netherlands equalised in the starting of second half. Boadu scored from a close range shot. Both teams kept on trying for the winner. France got 7 corners in total but they could not get advantage. It stayed 1-1 till the injury time, untill again Boadu scored from a cross by Kluivert. There was no time left for France to do anything after the goal.

Portugal vs Italy

This was a thriller. All the drama and all the spices were mixed in this one. . . Portugal's Dany Mota scored in the sixth minute itself with a superb bicycle kick and took lead. He scored again in the 31st minute to give a cushion for the lead. . Portugal were playing 4-1-2-1-2 and Italy 3-5-2. Italy reduced their deficit in the 45 th minute through Pobega. But portugal scored again and made it 3-1 in the 58 min. This time it was Ramos who scored. But young Italians were not ready to give up without a fight. They scored twice again in the second half, Scamacca (60), and Cutrone in the 88th min. 

But, Italy lost a man in the 91st min , and the extra time was full of Portugal attack. They took 18 shots, 10 of them on target and got 10 corners. Eventually , they took the one man advantage and scored in 109 and 119 min, 2 excellent goals by Filipe and Conceicao.

Germany vs Denmark

4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 were the formations used. Germany started attacking from the very first min. . . And kept on doing so through out the first half. But they couldnt score as the first half ended 0-0. Denmark slowly came back to their natural game and took lead in the 69 min by Faghir by a cool finish. 

Germany kept on pressing to find an equaliser, and Denmark successfully defended untill 88th min. Germany got a corner and Nmecha turned the ball into goal to give lifeline. 

Germany took lead in 100th min of extra time.   Burkardt scored this time, when Denmark defenders failed to clear a long air ball into the box. It was not over as Denmark got a lifeline as a penalty for foul inside box. Nelsson scored and made it 2-2. 

In penalties, Denamrk missed the 6th kick after all scoring 5, Germany scored and won the game.

Spain vs Portugal

Spain 4-3-3 

Portugal 4-4-2 with a diamond in the midfield. 

As usual Gil was in good form, who started attacks from left flank early. His superb cross was not able to hit target in the 12 min. Portugal midfielder Pereiras shot was somehow pushed away by spain keeper Fernandez. Both teams went for break with 0-0 score without any team dominant. 

At the start of the second half, Cucurella's shot hit bar defeating keeper. Soon, Cuenca got a super chance to take the lead, from a free kick but his header was straight to keeper even though he was free. Spain attacked with full might in ths second half, but they couldnt find net. . 

There were 20 shots with just 4 on target, more ball possession, 10 corners to 3 of Portugal, clearly dominating thr half. But, the vital goal came in the 79th min. A right wing cross came delfected of Cuenca over the keeper into the net. Spain tried harder to get the match back , but there wasnt much time and Portugal defended well.

Netherlands vs Germany

Germany were playing 4-3-3 against Netherlands 4-4-2. 

Germany opened the scoring in the very first minute from a outside foot cross from left flank by Nmecha and Florian Wirtz turned the ball into the net running behind defenders before it reached keeper. Wirtz struck again in the 7th minute with a thunderous right footed shot from just outside the box. Eventhough Netherlands had more control over ball, they couldn't make real goal scoring opportunities. Justin Kluivert got a one on one situation with German keeper but he hit his body and missed. On the other hand, Germans hit the post 3 times- one from free kick in first half and a shot from left wing and a header in second half. 

In the second half, Holland scored one back in 67th minute from a free kick, when Schuurs got a ball inside box which came bouncing from German player. Match became abit harsh in the fight for final, but Germans stood strong. Netherlands were looking better with 3 corners to 0, more ball possession and passing. But they couldn't overcome the early advantage Germans got in the match , thanks to Writz brilliance

We have witnessed a thrilling end for the season with all foots going out and trying their best to clinch valuable points. Here are some interesting facts and figures from the season. . . 

CHAMPIONS

Manchester City took back title from Liverpool with 27 wins from 38 matches, they scored 83 goals in total and bagged 86 points in the process, with a goal difference of 51. 

Under Guardiola, City have become a formidable side, strong in all areas, on and off the ball. Goalkeeper Ederson has won golden gloves with 19 clean sheets, thanks to their brilliant defense, Ruben Diaz, Fernandinho and others. 

Manchester United, at a point, looked very weak and slow. . But eventually found rhythm and came up the table with some scintillating come back wins. With Bruno Fernandes was key to their successful chase, well supported by Cavani, Fred, Rashford and captain Maguire. 

Liverpool were going strong until Van Dijk injury. Klopp said this was the reason, otherwise they were going to repeat their last season success. Mane looked down and lost confidence but Salah fought well till the last day for the top scorer spot with 22 goals. 

Aston Villa were on top, surprising all, until Jack Grealish got injured on February 21. Without his presence , Villa got only 10 points from 10 matches, which clearly shows his value. 

Under Ancelotti, everton have reformed and found its way up the table but lacked consistency. Calvert Lewin, brilliant Brazilian Richarlison and James Rodrigues were taking them to new heights. 

Arsenal never came close to top four this season. Arteta had so many worries to handle, and Aubemeyangs form added to them. 

Season saw Spurs bringing and sacking Jose Mourinho. He brought the team upto 5 at a point, but eventually started losing shine. Son-Kane combo worked brilliantly , both netting a total of 50 goals out of their 68 goals. They created a record for combination goals with 34 goals in total. Not only in scoring and assisting, spurs forwards hit the target woodwork the most, 23 times. 

Other teams which need special mention are West Ham and NewCastle. New Castle were on the verge of getting relegated and some high spirited performances in the last 10 games brought them up to 12 spots. On the other hand, with the heroic play by Jesse Lingard, it looked like they were going for European championship. They both deserve some applause and respect. 

Season also saw dramas related to European super league which led to fans invading the pitch before Liverpool's match against Manchester United. Fans forced English teams to withdraw from the league which aimed for nothing else but money. 

Many heroes were leaving the league playing their last matches like Aguero. He wrote a fairytale with 2 awesome goals in his last match. He also broke Wayne Rooney's record of 183 goals for a single team (184).

Now it's time for European leagues finals before Euro kick off. Football is going to be in the skies all along.

India will be playing their next stage World Cup qualifier on June 3 against Qatar, June 7 against Bangladesh and against Afghanistan on June 15.  Team is currently at Doha Qatar. 

105 FIFA ranked team's captain is Sunil Chhetri and coach is Igor Stimac from Croatia, who played semi final in 1998 World Cup. 

Team is working hard to regain their 1950s glory by winning qualifiers and reach World Cup. Currently , they are 4th in the group behind Qatar, Oman and Afghanistan with draws against Asians champions Qatar, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. But , they got thrashed by UAE in a friendly on 29 March. 

With increasing quality in Indian Super league and FC Goa reaching AFC league, team is in good hope. Team will be playing 4-5-1 against Qatar.

UEFA came into existence in 1954 and Finland are member since 1 no957. Still, it is the first time they are qualifying for the tournament. Football Association of Finland controls football in Finland. Their current FIFA ranking is 54, best being 33 in 2007. 

In 2008, team came close to qualifying, with last match in a must win situation, settled in a draw with Portugal, ending up second to them (27 points, Finland 24). They have seen many misfortunes over the years and ofcourse lack of quality in team. 

In 2019 team secured a spot in Euro for the first time in their history. Eventhough they have participated in 4 Olympics, qualified campaign was first for them. Thanks to Teemu Pukki of Norwich City for his excellent finishing skills and scoring 10 goals in Qualifying campaigns. 

They played 3-5-2 in their last match against Switzerland , and 5-3-2 against Ukraine before.

Football Federation of Macedonia regulates the game at North Macedonia. Their current FIFA   ranking is 62. Ever since their independence from Yugoslavia, their team have played some impressive matches, they have defeated Germany in Germany, draws with England, Holland, Croatia, Italy and Serbia. In their European qualifiers, won 4, lost 4 and 2 went into draw. They finished third behind Poland and Austria, before defeating Georgia 1-0 in play offs.

 Even though Manchester City's Ederson got the Golden Glove for the season, I strongly believe Edourd Mendy was great in his first sesson with Chelsea.

29 year old Senegal player reached Chelsea from french club Rennes, with a strong recommendation by Petre Chek, former Chelsea legend. He kept that belief with three consecutive clean sheets, first time after Petre Chek himself. He made it 5 consecutive, a historical first in decade. 

He finished second in clean sheets behind Ederson in league, which was crucial in Chelsea's performance in season after a bad start.

Mendy has played only 2700 minutes in league this season, conceding 24 goals, least in league by any keeper. If you compare to other keeper with similar time spend at field, Alison has conceded 32 in 2790 minutes of keeping. He has saved 70% of the shots to the target. He was phenomenal in Chelsea's champions league performance by keeping 8 of their 11 matches clean, conceding only 3 goals so far. 

English Premier league is most competitive league in world , with all the big names there. There are many quality keepers like Shmeichel, Pickford, Pope, Ederson, De Gea. . Its a very competitive platform. Defense is a collective effort including Defenders. Even though, keepers play a vital role in teams performance and wins. 

Mendy has also played an important role in Senegal becoming runners up in the African Nations Cup. He is the only african goal keeper in the league. His cousing Ferdinand Mendy plays for Real Madrid. 

Mendy has got a 5 year contract with Chelsea. It is sure that his stay will be crucial and good for the club. I even believe he was the Player of the Season for Chelsea for the season even though it was awarded to Mason Mount.

As the season reaches half way mark, 4-2-3-1 is the formation used mostly in majority of leagues.

Why? 

This formation balances team in attack and defence. And helps in covering most of the ground easily so that team can keep possession and convert possession to attack and goals. 

There are many other teams who use its variants like 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-2-1 which gives supremacy at midfield. 

In modern day football, most of the team wishes to start from back , build attack then reach in opposition box in numbers. That's why 4-2-3-1 is so much accepted. 

Teams like Real Madrid and Liverpool use long airballs to attack so use 4-3-3. Instead, 4-2-3-1 uses penetrating passes, space behind defenders, 1-2 s and off ball movements. Instead of crosses, formation uses box and area infront of goal to attack and score. 

Mourinho used this formation in 14-15 season to make Chelsea champions, with Matic and John Obi Mikel as CDM and Hazard , Oscar and Willian as attacking midfielders. Mourinho used Diego Costa as one Forward, who was strong , would hold the ball at attacking third of pitch and combine with attacking midfielder to score. 

When team loses possession, formation helps to re organise very quickly and cover danger areas as CDM always waits for ball at midfield. Formation also gives more freedom for wing backs. 

Even though , it uses front area of opposition field more to pressure, when they regain ball possession, uses wingers to take ball forward or into box and uses small ground crosses to score using AMF and FW. If the ball gets cleared, Wing backs and CDM will be ready to get it back and attack. 

In modern football, as teams try to press early and high up the opposite team pitch, 4-2-3-1 gives more chances to win ball early without running more so that players can keep their stamina. 

It is said that the formation got wide spread acceptance from Spain first. Then, with its success and changing need of speed and possession in football, formation got more users. 

How to learn/practice 4-2-3-1?

Formation based small sided game sessions are the best way to practice this formation. 

4 a side

Use 3-1 formation as lone FW and 3 midfielders. 

6 a side

Gradually add CDM into the practice with 2-3-1 into form in play. In opposition, make defenders play in 4-2 formation. 

Rondo

4v2 and 6v3 rondos are very effective for its practice as formation demands high level of coordination among players, especially attacking players, movement.

Was Christensen foul inevitable?

 Football is the most complete game. We play it with foot but also with wisdom. Football players might be using brain in field more than chess players. We calculate movement, space, speed , use awareness and mental strength in football. We play football with brain , eyes , ears, and every part of body. 

We judge situations from the very beginning of the play. When we have ball, when we don't have , while attacking defending, at start , at 89th minute, we always assess situations. Every player individually assess and decide to make a team successful. 

Am a Chelsea FC fan. I support, and wish they win every time. I try to learn from their games. From the time of Mourinho till now. Am looking forward to Lampard, who was a legend as player, now take club to heights. He took charge of club as manager in 2019. Last year, he managed to finish 4th , even with transfer ban. Now, ban lifted and new players like Kai Haverts, Thiago Silva, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech joining alongside Mason Mount, Kovacic, Jorginho, James, Tammy Abraham, Alonso, Giroud expectations are high. 

The Scenario

Chelsea started 20-21 season with huge expectations and positively 3-1 win over Brighton. Second match against defending champions Liverpool was observed as Clash of Titans early in the league. Also, was viewed that winners would go ahead with more psychological boost. Liverpool's first match was against Leeds who came as promoted and played well to pressure Klopp and team in 4-3 last minute goal win. So they wanted to win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. 

Match started well, even though Chelsea had some off balance moments. Werner was distubing Liverpool defense. His 2 shots went past Pool goal, second one being a big miss. Chelsea were struggling to play up from goal kick, with Liverpool pressing high successfully. But, they managed to keep score 0-0 till Christensen foul and sent off just before half time. 

Ball came directly from Liverpool defense , over midfielders, infront of Chelsea box, splitting their centre backs. Mane was quick to reach ball , leaving Christensen behind and Kepa still approaching. Christensen put his hands across Mane and dragged him to ground. 

In second half, Chelsea were already looking to admit the fate. Kai Haverts was sacrificed to bring in Tomoro as centre back. Liverpool struck in 50th minute through Mane. They doubled their lead in 54th minute, again scored by Mane and this time mistake from goal keeper Kepa. 

Now , again back to question, was that foul and red card necessary in the first half , making team so down and leaving to losing side? 

I think he could have left him, without fouling and defend or concede to score and fight back. There was option to let him miss, or Kepa save it. Getting red left team with nothing to fight back to a formidable Liverpool side. They had chance of winning it with all team in ground.

We have seen similar fouls in the history of the game many times. 

Recently, Real Madrid's Fede Velverde fouled Morata in 115th min in Spanish supercopa final against Athletico Madrid. Real win in penalties. That was considered to be a match winning foul, because of the time, situation and the result. 

In this season, Sheffield United player John Egan conceding a silly red card in 12 th minute and team lost to Aston Villa for a 1-0 score. 

Chelsea had centre back deficiency ever since John Terry left. Rudiger, Zouma, Tomoro Christensen were used in rotation , experimentally in last season. I hope that orts out this season with experienced Thiago Silva joining team. 

Every team have a choice of letting things happen and fight back without doing un necessary fouls and getting reds. Believe in yourself and team and fortune.

Why England could win UEFA Nations League

 After a long corona break, football is coming back slowly to full swing in Europe. After the dramatic completion of UEFA Champions league and Europa league, now it's time for the second edition of the biennial tournament UEFA nations league. Now it's time for countries to sweat. All 55 of UEFA members will compete in 4 group leagues, from today. Group A, B and C consists of 16 teams each and 7 teams in D. Teams are divided according to current FIFA World rankings. 

START

Proposal came in UEFA for a third national competition in 2013 , after FIFA World cup  and Euro Cup. The matches were planned to be set on international friendly dates. As the tournament format was league, all teams would get chance to perform, improve quality and financial benefits. Also, media coverage helps to bring glamour of football players and tournament to low ranked countries. It is also linked to the qualifications of Euro Cup and FIFA World Cup Tournaments. 

In the first Championship, Portugal beat Netherlands 1-0 in the final to lift the cup. England and Switzerland were on 3 and 4th positions respectively. Higher teams from groups B,C and D will be promoted and lower teams will be delegated. Groups are further divided into 4 sub groups. Four groups champions will compete in the finals , which will be 2 semi finals and final.

The Coach

After the frustrating second round loss to Iceland in Euro 2016, England chaged to a better side. They changed playing style under coach Gareth Southgate. The result was coming and was clearly visible from their 2018 Russia World Cup 4th place finish. 

Instead of long air balls to attacking, they started using fast passes to intrude into opponents territory. 

Young England.

English team is young, but experienced from the biggest domestic club league in the world. Captain Harry Kane has played 45 international matches , and has a prolific scoring ability. Along side Kane, joins Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Delle Ali, Mason Mount. Pickford or Dean Henderson will be at goal. 

Along with Jordan Henderson, Ross Barkley, Jesse Lingard, young Players like Phil Foden, Greelish, James Maddison joins at midfield. 

UCL sucess 

In recent years, English clubs have performed well in UCL. In 2018 , it was all England Semi. Also in Europa league, it was English final. English players were key in the success of the club's. 

Also, after pandemic, many of the players and clubs were not practicing. Return of English premier league and matches at UCL and Europa league will be helpful for the team. Because of the late finish of league, players are coming with fresh legs. 

Tactical approach. 

May clubs tried 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 in recent months. But, England will be playing 4-3-3 in the tournament. 

In the absence of Maguire, Tomori and Chilwell will be Centre Backs. Danny Rose at left and Trent Arnold at Right wings. 

Jordan Henderson will be at centre as midfielder along withMason Mount and Jesse Lingaard. 

Captain Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Sterling would start as forwards but Jadon Sancho have more chance as right forward as he is more experienced.
